How the Bid Calculator Works
When you buy a vehicle at a Copart auction, the final cost is higher than your winning bid. Copart adds a buyer fee, internet bid fee (if bidding online), gate fee, and additional fees. This calculator works in reverse: you tell us your total budget, and we calculate the highest bid you can place without exceeding that budget.
Example: Budget of $5,000.00
If your all-in budget is $5,000.00 and you are an individual bidding online:
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Your Maximum Bid | $3,946 |
| Buyer Fee ($3,946 bid) | $850 |
| Internet Bid Fee | $89 |
| Gate Fee | $95.00 |
| Additional Fees | $59.00 |
| Total Cost | $5,000.00 |
In this scenario, fees consume approximately 21% of your budget. The higher your budget, the more fees eat into it — especially for individual buyers at the 15% tier above $10,000.
Why Fees Vary So Much
The fee percentage depends heavily on your buyer type and bid amount. Individual buyers at higher price points can see effective fee rates of 15% or more. Business buyers enjoy significantly lower rates. Online bidding adds an internet fee of $0-$129, while live bidding avoids it entirely. Use the calculator above to see your exact numbers.
Tips for Maximizing Your Bid
- Bid live instead of online — you avoid the $0-$129 internet bid fee, leaving more budget for your actual bid.
- Register as a business if you are a licensed dealer — business buyer fees are substantially lower than individual fees.
- Remember hidden costs — this calculator only covers Copart's auction fees. Budget separately for sales tax, shipping, and storage.
- Round down your bid — Copart fees are tiered. A bid just above a tier boundary can push your buyer fee to the next level.
