Copart Buyer Fee Guide

The Copart buyer fee is the single largest variable cost in any auction purchase. It is a tiered fee based on your winning bid amount, and the rate you pay depends on whether you are an individual (public) buyer or a business (licensed dealer) buyer. Individual buyers pay fees ranging from $25 on the smallest bids to 15% of the bid for amounts over $10,000. Business buyers pay significantly lower rates, from $35 up to $700 plus 1% of the bid for amounts exceeding $5,000. This guide covers every tier with tables and worked examples so you can calculate your exact buyer fee before you bid.

Individual Buyer Fee Table

Individual buyers — anyone who is not a licensed dealer — pay according to the following tiered schedule. The fee increases in steps as the bid amount rises, and for bids over $10,000, it becomes a straight percentage.

Bid Range Buyer Fee
$0.00 – $49.99 $25.00
$50.00 – $99.99 $45.00
$100.00 – $199.99 $80.00
$200.00 – $299.99 $135.00
$300.00 – $349.99 $160.00
$350.00 – $399.99 $180.00
$400.00 – $499.99 $205.00
$500.00 – $599.99 $235.00
$600.00 – $699.99 $260.00
$700.00 – $799.99 $285.00
$800.00 – $899.99 $315.00
$900.00 – $999.99 $335.00
$1,000.00 – $1,199.99 $415.00
$1,200.00 – $1,399.99 $460.00
$1,400.00 – $1,499.99 $480.00
$1,500.00 – $1,999.99 $600.00
$2,000.00 – $2,999.99 $750.00
$3,000.00 – $3,999.99 $850.00
$4,000.00 – $4,999.99 $900.00
$5,000.00 – $7,499.99 $950.00
$7,500.00 – $9,999.99 $1,000.00
$10,000.00+ 15% of bid

As you can see, the fee structure has 22 tiers. Each tier applies a fixed dollar amount except the final one, which is a percentage. This means the effective rate decreases at higher bid amounts in percentage terms, but the absolute dollar amount continues to increase.

Business Buyer Fee Table

Licensed business buyers (dealers, dismantlers, exporters, and rebuilders) pay a simpler fee schedule with only six tiers. At every price point, the business buyer fee is lower than the individual buyer fee.

Bid Range Buyer Fee
$0.00 – $99.99 $35.00
$100.00 – $499.99 $150.00
$500.00 – $999.99 $250.00
$1,000.00 – $1,999.99 $400.00
$2,000.00 – $4,999.99 $550.00
$5,000.00+ $700 + 1% of bid

The business fee schedule becomes particularly advantageous at higher bid amounts. At $10,000, an individual buyer pays $1,500 (15%) while a business buyer pays $800 ($700 + 1%), saving $700 on the buyer fee alone.

Worked Examples

Example 1: $800 Bid — Individual Buyer

An individual buyer wins a vehicle with an $800 bid. Looking at the individual tier table, bids from $800 to $899.99 carry a buyer fee of $315.00. This represents an effective rate of 39.4% of the winning bid.

Example 2: $3,000 Bid — Individual Buyer

For a $3,000 winning bid, the individual buyer fee jumps to $850.00. The effective rate is 28.3% — lower in percentage terms than the $800 example but a significantly higher dollar amount. This is because the $3,000 tier has a fixed fee rather than a percentage.

Example 3: $8,000 Bid — Business Buyer

A licensed dealer wins a vehicle at $8,000. Since this falls in the $5,000+ tier where the fee is $700 plus 1% of the bid, the buyer fee is $700 + ($8,000 × 0.01) = $780.00. The effective rate is just 9.8% — a substantial savings compared to the individual buyer rate at the same price point.

Why Are Business Buyer Fees Lower?

Licensed dealers, dismantlers, rebuilders, and exporters purchase vehicles in high volume and hold professional credentials. Copart incentivizes this volume by offering lower buyer fees. Business memberships also often come with additional benefits such as earlier access to vehicle listings and reduced deposit requirements. If you frequently buy from Copart, obtaining a business license can save thousands of dollars in buyer fees over time.
