Copart Fees Explained

Copart charges multiple fees beyond the winning bid that every buyer must pay before taking possession of a vehicle. There are four main fee categories: Buyer Fee (tiered based on bid amount and buyer type), Internet Bid Fee (online bidders only, ranging from $0 to $129), Gate Fee ($95.00 flat), and Additional Fees (~$59.00 for environmental, service, and mailing charges). Depending on your bid amount, total fees can add anywhere from $200 to over $1,200 to your winning bid. Understanding these fees before you bid is critical to avoiding surprises on your final invoice.

The Four Copart Fee Categories

1. Buyer Fee

The buyer fee is the largest and most variable charge. It is tiered based on your winning bid amount, and the rate differs between individual (public) buyers and business (licensed dealer) buyers. Individual buyers pay from $25 on very small bids up to 15% of the bid on amounts over $10,000. Business buyers benefit from significantly lower rates, paying from $35 up to $700 plus 1% of the bid for amounts over $5,000. For a detailed tier-by-tier breakdown, see our complete buyer fee guide.

2. Internet Bid Fee (Virtual Bid Fee)

If you place your bid online rather than attending the auction in person, Copart adds an Internet Bid Fee. This fee has eight tiers starting at $0 for bids under $100 and reaching $129 for bids over $8,000. This charge is completely waived if you bid in person at a live auction or at a Copart kiosk. Visit our virtual bid fee page for the full tier table.

3. Gate Fee

Every vehicle purchase includes a flat gate fee of $95.00. This charge covers vehicle preparation for pickup and administrative processing at the yard. It applies regardless of bid amount, buyer type, or whether you bid online or in person. See our gate fee guide for details.

4. Additional Fees

Copart bundles several smaller charges into an estimated additional fee of approximately $59.00. This typically covers environmental handling fees, service fees, and document mailing costs. Like the gate fee, this is a flat charge that does not vary with your bid amount.

Estimated Total Fees at Common Bid Amounts

The following table shows the estimated total fees for individual buyers bidding online at four common bid amounts. These figures use the current publicly available Copart member fee schedule.

Bid Buyer Fee Internet Fee Gate Fee Additional Total Fees % of Bid
$500.00 $235.00 $49.00 $95.00 $59.00 $438.00 87.6%
$2,000.00 $750.00 $89.00 $95.00 $59.00 $993.00 49.6%
$5,000.00 $950.00 $99.00 $95.00 $59.00 $1,203.00 24.1%
$10,000.00 $1,500.00 $129.00 $95.00 $59.00 $1,783.00 17.8%

As the table shows, fees represent a much larger percentage at lower bid amounts (over 70% on a $500 bid) and decrease as a percentage for higher bids. This is because the flat gate fee and additional fees are the same regardless of the vehicle price.

What These Fees Do NOT Include

The four fees above cover Copart's standard auction charges, but your total out-of-pocket cost will likely be higher. The following costs are not included in Copart's fee structure:
