Copart Gate Fee Explained
The Copart gate fee is a flat charge of $95.00 applied to every vehicle purchase. It is one of the simplest fees in Copart's structure: the same amount regardless of the vehicle price, your buyer type (individual or business), or whether you bid online or in person. Every buyer pays it on every vehicle, making it a predictable part of your total cost. Combined with the additional fees, these flat charges add $154.00 to every invoice before any variable fees are applied.
What Does the Gate Fee Cover?
The gate fee is intended to cover the costs Copart incurs preparing a vehicle for you to take possession of it. Specifically, it includes:
- Vehicle preparation for pickup — Once you pay for a vehicle, Copart staff must locate it in the yard, verify the paperwork, and stage it near the pickup area so you or your transporter can load it efficiently.
- Administrative processing — This covers the cost of processing the sale, generating title documents, and maintaining the chain of ownership records that Copart is required to keep.
- Yard maintenance and security — A portion of the gate fee supports the general infrastructure of the Copart yard, including fencing, lighting, surveillance, and staffing that keeps vehicles secure between the auction and pickup.
Think of the gate fee as a processing and handling charge. It is similar to what you might pay at a traditional dealership for document preparation, except that it is standardized across all Copart transactions.
Does the Gate Fee Vary by Location or Vehicle?
The standard gate fee is $95.00 at most Copart locations, but it is important to note that some variation exists. Certain yard locations — particularly those in states with different regulatory requirements or higher operating costs — may charge a slightly different amount. Additionally, special vehicle types such as heavy-duty trucks, motorcycles, or boats may have different gate fees. The best practice is to always check your invoice for the exact amount rather than assuming $95.00.
For estimation purposes, $95.00 is the most commonly reported rate and is what our fee calculator uses by default.
Can the Gate Fee Be Waived?
In nearly all cases, the gate fee cannot be waived or negotiated. It is a standard charge that applies to every transaction. Unlike the Internet Bid Fee — which you can avoid by bidding in person — the gate fee has no workaround. Whether you are an individual buyer or a licensed dealer, whether you bid $50 or $50,000, the gate fee appears on your invoice.
Some long-standing business accounts with very high purchase volumes may negotiate custom fee arrangements directly with Copart, but these are exceptions rather than the rule. For the vast majority of buyers, the gate fee is a fixed cost of doing business with Copart.
Example: Gate Fee in Context
To see how the gate fee fits into the total cost, here is a breakdown for an individual buyer who won a vehicle with a $3,000 online bid:
| Line Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Winning Bid | $3,000.00 |
| Buyer Fee (Individual) | $850.00 |
| Internet Bid Fee (Online) | $89.00 |
| Gate Fee | $95.00 |
| Additional Fees | $59.00 |
| Estimated Total | $4,093.00 |
At a $3,000 bid, the $95.00 gate fee represents 2.3% of the total cost. On lower bids, it represents a larger share. On a $500 bid with fees totaling roughly $938.00, the gate fee is about 10.1% of the total — a significant proportion that underscores why flat fees hit small purchases harder.
Gate Fee vs. Other Flat Fees
Copart charges two flat fees that do not change with the bid amount: the gate fee ($95.00) and the additional fees (~$59). Together, these add a baseline of about $154 to every purchase. The remaining fees — the buyer fee and the internet bid fee — vary based on the bid amount and how you bid.
